History

Nearly three decades ago, retired tour bus driver George Pendergast read an inspiring article about the New Horizon Band in Rochester, New York.  George called New Horizon director Roy Ernst, who suggested a band be formed in Santa Barbara.

George knew immediately who should lead the new band.  Van (J.B.) Vander Ark, a beloved long-time teacher at La Colina Junior High School, took the baton.  With support and initial underwriting from Nick Rail and Nick Rail Music, the Prime Time Band began making music.

The first rehearsal in August 1995 drew 33 people, half of whom had never played an instrument before.  Since then, band membership has ranged from 60 to 90 musicians, including brand new players and a handful of members who have played with the group for 20+ years.

Prime Time Band has been frequently in the spotlight and has been officially designated as a “Santa Barbara Treasure” by the City of Santa Barbara.
